Research Note.2

From "The Black book" in the Norfolk Record Office :-

"A glass from which Queen Anne drank
This wine glass is plain bell shaped about 3 ½ inches wide at the top tapering to a stem composed of two bulbs and ending in a flat foot about 2 ¾ inches wide at the bottom. The total height from foot to top of the glass is about 7 ¼ inches. Inside the top & larger bulb on the stem appears to be an air space showing the shape of a balloon.
(Drawing of wine glass)
Round the rim of the glass is cut by a diamond
“Let no disloyal wretch my brim profane
I’ve kissed the sacred lips of good Queen Anne”
At the bottom of the foot of the glass is the following around it
“Queen Anne drank out of this glass at Trinity College in Cambridgeshire April 10th 1705”
Round the top bulb on the stem is cut
        “Willm Ray Worlingworth 1748”
The above glass came to me from my cousin Katherine Ray Smee daughter of Capt John Barker & his wife Mary second of the four daughter of my great grandfather William Ray of Tannington Place Suffolk. He no doubt had owned the glass prior to his death when it passed to Mary. He was not however the William Ray of Worlingworth whose name is cut on the glass with the date 1748.
I think the original owner of 1748 must have been either William Ray born 1705 died 24 March 1768 who married Rebecca Smyth born about 14 Aug 1708 daughter of the Rev. James Smyth of Stow Bredon or perhaps his uncle William Ray born about 1676 died 21 May 1750 buried at Monk Soham where he was incumbent. I have not enquired as to whether or not the Rev. James Smyth or the Rev. William Ray had any connection with Trinity College Cambridgeshire. Any how the glass has been in our family over 214 years & I hope will so remain for a long time to come as an heirloom.”
Signed 1962

Research Note :-
Queen Ann knighted Isaac Newton at Trinity College, Cambridge on 16th April 1705. She was visiting Cambridge with her husband and her whole court. In the evening a dinner was given for her and her court in the Hall of Trinity College
