Born at Eastham 30th December 1802, Killed at Kabul 23rd December 1841.
One of the victims of the treacherous massacre of the British envoy by Akbar Khan in Afghanistan.
Also to the memory of Mary, his widow.
Youngest daughter of William Spottiswoode (Laird of Glenfernet, Perth.)
Born 17th March 1810, died in London 11th October 1889.
She accompanied her husband to Kabul and with her eight children was among the few survivors of the
disastrous retreat of the British Army in 1842, who were held captive for ten months.

(School, Rugby.) Matric. Michs. 1820; Scholar, 1821. Kept three terms. Cadet, Bengal Amy, 1823; Ensign, 1824; transferred to the Cavalry, 1825; Lieut. 1825; Brevet Captain, 1839. Married, June 29, 1829, Mary, youngest dau. of William Spottiswoode, Laird of Glenfernate, Perths., and had issue. Served in the first Afghan War, 1838-41. Taken as a hostage and present at conference with Akban Khan and other chefs; assassinated, with Sir W. Macnaughton, at Kabul, Dec. 23, 1841. His widow and seven children were handed over for safe conduct to Akbar Khan at the beginning of the retreat from Kabul, after 10 months of captivity they were rescued by the arrival of the force under General Pollock. Brother of John. (1812).”
