Obituary.8

From the Times :-
"Major-General Trevor, V.C.
Major-General William Spottiswoode Trevor, V.C., who died on Saturday at his residence, Queen's-mansions, Victoria-street, was born in India on October 9, 1831, and was the second son of the late Captain A. S. Trevor, of the 3rd Bengal Cavalry, who was killed at Kabul in 1841. Educated at Addiscombe, he obtained a commission in the Bengal Engineers in 1849, and three years later served in the Burmese war, including the operations in the vicinity and capture of Rangoon, where he was severely wounded, and the attack on the Burmese stockades on March 19, 1853, when he was slightly wounded. For his gallant conduct on these occasions he was mentioned in despatches and as having headed and as having headed the assaults on both occasions. Four years later he took part in the operations against the Dacca mutineers. In the Bhutan Expedition of 1865, he with Lieutenant J. Dundas, R. E., who died of his wounds, headed the assault at the capture of Dewangiri, receiving five wounds, and for bravery in this action was again mentioned in despatches, received the Victoria Cross, and brevet of Major. General Trevor was also one of the very few remaining survivors of the prisoners kept by Akbar Khan on the occasion of the retreat from Kabul in 1841, and up to the time of his death retained a clear recollection of the events of his captivity. He also did excellent service in India in the Public Works Department, and he held successively the appointments of Provincial Chief Engineer, Director-General of Railways, and secretary to the Government of India. He retired in 1887."
