Death of Eliza MOORE in Australia, Norwood.6

10th Jun 1924

Died in Australia, Adelaide.2

From the Register :-
At Chester Street, Henley Beach, on Tuesday, the death occurred of Mr. Richard John Buttery, following two days on the anniversary of his ninetieth birthday. He was born in London on June 8, 1834, and arrived in Australia in 1863. in his younger days he was a well known cabinet maker, and was the founder, with his brother Henry, in the early days of Adelaide, of the furniture manufacturing business of Buttery Brothers, of Rundle Street. the firm existed for about 16 years, when Mr Buttery withdrew, and established a factory at Norwood on the site at present occupied by Lloyd's Timber Mills. He lived for many years at Osmond Terrace, Norwood, and was well known as an excellent tradesman. In reference to his Adelaide business, the firm was the first of its kind in the State to use machinery. When the owners sold out, their land was purchased by Pengelly and Co., of Edwardstown, who were just then starting in business. Fourteen years ago the late Mr. Buttery retired. He devoted much of his leisure to bowls and chess. During recent years he had lived with his sons, Mr. R. H. Buttery, and his daughter, Caroline, of Henley Beach. He has left also a son, Mr. Charles Buttery (of Dulwich). His wife died 30 years ago. The firm of Buttery Brothers, Parade, Norwood, is controlled by his nephews."
