"March 9, at Budleigh Salterton, aged 75, John Campbell, Esq. - a staunch, zealous, and consistant Reformer throughout the whole of his long life - a steady, faithful and attached friend to all who had the privilege of his intimate acquaintance - and a kind, generous, and benevolent friend to all beneath him. He was literally the father of Salterton, having settled there 40 years ago. His advice was eagerly sought, and readily obtained. His example was worthy of all imitations, and as he had lived respected and beloved, so is his memory cherished by the people of Budleigh Salterton with an affectionate heart"
