"Baird Smith passed through here yesterday on his way to ? and told us that Duncan is to get the Victoria Cross for his valour in the field and that he was the first to be recommended and he will be the first Indian Officer who has been decorated with it ..."

"Killed by an accidental explosion of a mine in the fort of Malagurth on the 1st Oct last, after having escaped unhurt from the assault of the Cashmere Gate at Delhi, which he gallantly led, Lieut Duncan Charles Home, of the Bengal Engineers, aged 28, eldest son of Major-General Richard Home, Hon. E. I. Co.'s Service."
