Research Note.5

Extract from :-
Margaret Bolton, "Not lost but gone before; the story of St Laurence churchyard". No imprint. Copies available from the church in Ramsgate.

"The vault to Peter Burgess (d.1846) and his wife Catherine (d.1840) is situated directly opposite the main church entrance, an important place for an important man. He was one of the richest men in Ramsgate and one who contributed most to the well-being and advancement of its inhabitants. When he was just 25, he opened the library on the corner of Queen Street and the High Street. In 1800, the first regular postal service to and from the town opened here, forty years before the national scheme and 'Penny Black'. Burgess married Catherine Tomson, daughter of the brewer, and ten years his junior, and proceeded to have a family to continue his empire. They lived at Southwood House. In 1808, he opened  a bank in the High Street which survived past his death until eventually absorbed into the South Eastern Banking Company in 1864. In 1839 Peter Burgess had the honour if opening the new Town Hall. The building of this had already been marred by tragedy, an 18 year old man being killed on the site on May 7th. Also in 1839, Burgess took a business partner, the printer William Hunt."
