"The death is announced as having occurred on the 14th inst., of General Sir William Payn, K.O.B., son of the late Mr. William Payn, of Kidwells, Maidenhead, and elder brother of Mr. James Payn, the novelist. During the Crimea war he commanded a regiment of the Turkish contingent; and in the course of the Indian Mutiny, in suppressing which he took an active part, being present both at the battle of Cawnpore and the siege of Lucknow, as well as at many other less important engagements, he was mentioned five times in dispatches. From 1878 to 1883 General Payn commanded the Mysore division of the Madras Army"

"The death is announced as having occurred on the 14th inst., of General Sir William Payn, K.C.B., son of the late Mr. William Payn, of Kidwells, Maidenhead, and elder brother of Mr. James Payn, the novelist. Born in 1823, he entered the army in 1842, and between 1845 and 1852 served in the Sutlej and other campaigns in India. During the Crimean was he commanded a regiment of the Turkish contingent; and in the course of the Indian Mutiny, in suppressing which he took an active part, being present both at the battle of Cawnpore and the siege of Lucknow, as well as many other less important engagements, he was mentioned five times in despatches. For his distinguished service during this campaign he was made a C.B. and received the brevet rank of lieutenant-colonel. From 1879 until 1883 General Payn commanded the Mysore division of the Madras Army. He was made a K.C.B. in 1886, and placed on the retired list as a general three years later. But his name was kept upon the reserve of officers, and in 1892 he became colonel of the Bedfordshire Regiment, which he continued to command until his death."
