"Colonel Henry Francis Cleveland, C.I.E., died suddenly on Saturday at his home, 79, Lee-road, Blackheath. He was a J.P. for the County of London and late Assistant Director of Medical Service, Lahore Divisional Area, India.
Colonel Cleveland was the son of the late Mr. Henry Cleveland, Solicitor to the Government of Bombay, and was born in November 1863. He was educated at Charterhouse and in Germany, and later joined University College School and Hospital. He entered the Indian Medical Service in 1889 and took part in the Tirah campaign on the North-West Frontier in 1897-98, receiving a medal and clasp. In 1900 he served in China, where he received a medal and the American Order of the Yellow Dragon, and in 1911 was promoted to Brevet Colonel for distinguished service other than in the field. He was made Honorary Surgeon to the Viceroy in 1913, and office which he held till 1918. During the Great War he served with the Aden Field Force from 1914 to 1916, receiving three medals, and in 1919 he was awarded another medal and mentioned in dispatches for his service in the Afghan War. He retired in 1922.
He married Kathleen Rodway, elder daughter of the late Mr. G. Rodway Swinhoe, of Swindon, and had one daughter.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, at 11.30 at the Old Charterhouse."
