"Obituary
The death is announced of Major-General Herbert Raban, retired Bengal Staff Corps. The deceased officer, was born in 1820, arrived in India in March, 1841. He had previously entered Exeter College, Oxford, and took his B.A. degree many years later while on furlough. His first service was with the army of the Sutlej, and he was present at the battle of Aliwal in 1845. His principal employment was, however, in connection with the police, and he filled several responsible posts in Sylhet and also at Calcutta till he at last attained the grade of Deputy Inspector-General. He was twice employed as private secretary to the Lieutenant-General of Bengal, first in 1857 and again in 1865. He retired from the service in 1875."
