"SPANISH LITERATURE
This Day are published, with Plates, price 7s. 6d. in boards, FABLES on Subjects connected with Literature, imitated from the Spanish of DON TOMAS DE YRIARTE. By JOHN BELFOUR, Esq.
The Fables of YRIARTE (a name little known in this country, though warmly applauded on the Continent by every admirer of Spanish Poetry), differ from those of other Fabulists in this, that their moral, or application, always turns on literary points; and begin or conclude, with apothegms, allusive mere to Authors and to Books, than to the follies of individuals, or the errors of common life. - Vide Preface, page 3'.

From the Gentleman's Magazine :-
"Lately. in the City Road, aged 74, John Belfour, esq. M.R.S.L.
Mr. Belfour's attainments and critical sagacity, in languages and archaeology, were entitled to respect. He was a proficient in several modern tongues, in particular Spanish, from which, early in his life, he translated and published a poem entitled "Music" by Don Tomas de Yriarte. Mr. Belfour had likewise studied with success the Hebrew and some other languages of the East. Latterly Egyptian and Babylonian Antiquities had become especially subjects of his investigations; in these and other topics of learned research, he from time to time communicated a number of ingenious papers to the Royal Society of Literature; one of which, entitle "Remarks on Certain Alphabets in use among the Jews." is printed in the Society's Transactions, vol. iii, pp. 136-142, and some others are noticed in the printed minutes of the Society's Proceedings. The only work, we believe, published by Mr. Belfour, besides the translation mentioned above, is "Odes in Honour of His Royal Highness the Prince Regent; with other Poems, 1812." of which only 25 copies were printed."
