"Last Monday in the Afternoon dy'd in an advanc'd Age, at the Talbot Inn in this Town, Mr. Alderman Cooper, one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for this Borough. He had serv'd the Office of Mayor for the same three Times, viz. in the Years, 1725, 1735, and 1745; and was a Gentleman of good character"

"Last Monday died near Derby, - Cooper, Esq; a Gentleman possess'd of a considerable Estate in that County. He infortunately fell into the Hands of the Rebels when they came to that Town, who used him unmercifully, for not giving them 200 l. on demand."

"While the bells rang and the bonfires added a welcome glow and warmth to the dwindling daylight, Charles and his father were publicly proclaimed before the Town Hall on Market Place, now overwhelmed by the occupying army. As no magistrate was available, the common town crier did the honours, according to the Derby Mercury. However, Hugh Bateman recorded that the Jacobite officers had 'seized upon Alderman Cooper, too lame to run away, and obliged him to proclaim the Prince'."

by 1676-1876
A notable inn, in the 16th-century building which survived, albeit covered in stucco until 1876, when the inn was demolished to make way for Messrs. Cromton & Evans new bank, now the 'Standing Order'. In the late 17th  century, it was a meeting place of the Derby Mercers' Company, but by the 1730s it was owned by Alderman Samuel Cooper, Mayor of Derby 1725, 1835, 1744, and who died there in February 1746."
