"THE RECENT EARTHQUAKE IN ROME
TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES
Sir, - In view of the exaggerated accounts, which have appeared in some of the English newspapers, of the recent earthquake in this city, it may be reassuring to intending visitors to Rome this winter to learn that the shock was by no means of a serious nature, and the damage, if any, caused by it of a very trifling nature.

From the Times :-
"A Reuters telegram from Rome says that Mr. A. R. FRANZ, British Consul there, was found dead in his bed yesterday morning. The cause of death was paralysis of the heart. Mr. Alexander Roesler Franz was Acting Consul in Rome for a brief period in 1862, and was unpaid Vice-Consul there from 1870 to 1872, when the post as abolished. In 1873 he was reappointed unpaid Vice-Consul, and was promoted to be Consul for the province of Rome in 1883. In 1885 he was appointed Consul for Ventral Italy, including the provinces for Rome, Perugia, Ascolin, and Macerata."
