Bedfordshire Regiment - D. L. de T. Fernandes

22nd Oct 1914

Died in Belgium, Ypres.7,8

From The Times :-
"Second Lieutenant Dudley Luis de Tavora Fernandes, 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, who was killed by a shell on October 22, had just completed his 21st year. He was the son of Mr. T. W. L. Fernandes, of Scarborough, and was educated at St. Peter's School, York, and afterwards at Sandhurst. In November, 1913, he was gazetted to the Bedfordshire Regiment, then at Pretoria, and after being in South Africa for nearly a year he returned to England with the regiment, and was sent to the front on October 5. His colonel has written of him :- 'Without any flattery, I can say that he was one of the best officers of his rank that we had ever had. Such a thorough gentleman, so popular with the officers and men, and so keen in his profession that, had he lived, he would have risen to high rank in the Service. I can assure you that his loss to the regiment is very great.'."
