Letter.4

From Robert Mylne to his mother, Elizabeth Mylne, née Duncan
"My Dear Madam,
I have within these few days entered into so new a situation of life as demands my acquaintance of you with it ...  I am Married, and that to a Woman, who is the Wife of my choice. - In this Step, as in every other, I have had more a regard to a prospect of domestick happiness, than any other consideration. - Money, I always despised, because I could procure it by Industry. She has no fortune, nor is of any family, nor of great Interest, nor connections. The figure of her person and what degree of beauty she may be possessed of I shall leave to others mention ti you: - anything a lover says on these points are not to be regarded. All that I shall mention is, that I think she is possessed of those qualities, which render life smooth and easy - she is industrious, active, knowing in the affairs of family, and most business wherein a Domestick woman shines. She is good natured, easy, full of life & spirit, has some share of wit, and great readiness of conception and expression. With these qualities, which suit my soul, I love her, and was thoroughly convinced a long time ago that she loved me. Her name is Mary Home, the Daughter of a Surgeon to a Regiment of light Horse ... As I know you take a great part in my happiness I think it equally my duty, as well as it is my wishes, to acquaint you with the best step of my life ..."

Letter.4

From Anne Mylne, the sister of Robert Mylne, to a friend :-
"My brother's marriage is not a joyous event as you imagine, he has unfortunately joined with a family that is the aversion of Mama and all our friends, the young Lady is pretty though not a Beauty - a great share of vivacity and sharp judgment, her father is a surgeon to a regiment had 7 children and only his pay to support them - So that neither their education nor Appearances, though Both were greatly above their Circumstances could be striking - I cannot tell you what surprise and uneasiness this affair has Cost us all - my Brother naturally haughty made all the world amaze, as he must undoubtedly support the whole family through time ... a family whose pride, poverty and Show render them Contemptible to all that know them - you will think me severe - But they behaved very badly to me. By endeavouring to make a Coolness Between us, and they do well succeeded."

Memorial or Grave Stone in Great Amwell, St John the Baptist, Mylne Family Vault.8

"Within are deposited the remains of Mary, the daughter of Robert Home, and wife Robert Mylne, to whom she bore ten children. She died July 13th, 1797, aged 49. With virtues which elevate human-nature, and milder graces which adorn it, she was pious, benevolent, sincere. A warm heart, an accuate judgement, engaging wit, and lively humour, gave ease and propriety to all her words and actions. In the hearts of her surviving children, to whom she exhibited a pattern of every example that polishes as well as ennobles society, her virtues, like her memory, will be ever green ; and they in pious gratitude dedicate this monument to cherish the fond remembrance of her affection as a parent, as her worth as a christian."
