From the Hastings & St Leonards Observer :-
"We regret to announce the death of Mr. George William Ferrars Loftus, which took place very suddenly on Tuesday last, at his residence, Briarfield, Laton-road. The deceased gentleman was a member of the congregation at Christ Church, Blacklands, and had recently joined the Church Committee. He had manifested a great deal of interest in the work of the church and parish since taking up his residence in Blacklands. Mr. Loftus was present and amongst those on the platform, at the sale of work last week. He caught a chill on Thursday, and retired early in the evening The illness was first thought to be influenza, but it proved to be peritonitis, and he became seriously ill on Monday, and died on Tuesday. The deceased gentleman was related to the present Marquess of Ely, and was grandson of General William Loftus and Lady Townsend. He leaves a widow, but no family. Before coming to Hastings Mr Loftus had resided at Bromley, Kent. He only recently bought the house "Briarfield" and intended to settle there. He was 60 years of age.
The funeral service takes place at Christ Church, Blacklands, to-day (Saturday), at two o'clock, the interment being at the Borough Cemetery."
