Research Note :_ Thomas Cotton was a solicitor. and was also attorney-clerk to the Williams Library in the City of London. He was later executor together with Okey Belfour and Margaret Belfour (the widow) of the estate of John Belfour who died in Wapping in early 1771. He was also the solicitor who wound up the affairs of Okey Belfour who died c.1762. His son Bayes Cotton was a witness of at the marriage Okey Belfour and Margaret Wright in 1779. Thomas Cotton married the sister of Thomas Bayes of "Bayes Theorem" fame, so Bayes Cotton was the nephew of Thomas Bayes. |

From the Marriage Licence :- Faculty Office "Appeared personally Okey Belfour and Thomas Wright (... illegible ...) first the said Okey Belfour for himself made Oath that he is of the parish of Saint John Hackney in the County of Middlesex a bachelor of the age of twenty one years and upward and intendeth to marry with Margaret Wright of the parish of Saint John Hackney aforementioned Spinster a Minor of the age of Seventeen years and upwards but under the age of Twenty one years by and with the consent of the said Thomas Wright the natural and lawful Father of the said Minor ... ... Research Note :- Bayes Cotton was the son of Thomas Cotton, an attorney at law to whom Okey had been apprenticed to in 1766. Bayes Cotton was also the nephew of Thomas Bayes of Bayes Theorem fame. |
