Notes

  • DAVID COOPER & THE MOTHER OF HIS CHIDREN

David, in his will signed on the 30 November 1719, mentions his surviving children :-  Samuel, Francis, David, Jane the wife of George Braisby (now decease), and Mary the wife of John Greatorex.

The first three of these children were baptised in St Peter's Derby and the last two in St Michael's.

Of the three baptised in St Peter's, the first, Jana/Jane, in 1663, has no mother's name on the parish register.  For the next two, Mary, in 1665, and Samuel, in 1670, the mother is named as Maria.

For the last two baptised in St Michael's, the first, Francis in 1673, the mother is named as Elizabeth and the last child, David in 1678, has no mother named.

The first questions then becomes :- who was Maria?  Who was Elizabeth?  When did they marry David and when did they died? The sequence of baptisms and mother's name suggests that Maria died after the birth of Samuel in 1670, then David remarried before the birth of Francis in 1673. Also sometime between 1670 and 1673 he moved parishes from St Peters to St Michaels.

It has been impossible to find a marriage for David and Maria or for David and Elizabeth within the time frame of 1670 and 1673 unless he married in a parish outside of Derbyshire. It also impossible to find a record of Maria's burial within the Derby area.  There certainly is a record for the burial of Elizabeth Cooper, the wife of Mr. David Cooper, in St Michaels in 1711.

The only possible marriage for David Cooper in Derbyshire that I have been able to find is in 1662 to Elizabeth Houghton - this is before the baptism of his first child Jana/Jane.

If this marriage record is the right one it raises yet more questions.

Is it for another unrelated David Cooper?

If it is correct why do two children have the name Maria as mother on the parish record?  Could it be a mistake on the part of the vicar or scribe?  Could it be that Elizabeth preferred the name Maria?
