Accident.1

From the report of the inquest :-
He attended a prize fight at Nomansland, near St Albans with Thomas Cay and Henry Stephenson. Afterwards the three had gone to St Albans to the Cross Keys Inn for some refreshments. On their return to London the postilion was alleged to have driven down Holywell Hill St Albans too fast. There was a collision at the bottom with gig and the phaeton in which the three were travelling was overturned and they were thrown out. Charles Pratt was knocked unconscious but recovered. He was seen by Dr. Burgess at the White Hart Inn but insisted on returning home. On the return journey he felt worse. He was attended by Sir Astley Cooper and Mr. Holt until his death.

From the report of the inquest :-
"On Saturday evening, J. W. Unwin, Esq., the coroner for the district, and a jury composed of the most respectable inhabitants of the neighbourhood, assembled at the Plough Inn, Tottenham, to inquire into the circumstances leading to the death of Charles Pratt, Esq., a young gentleman who only attained his majority on the 23rd of the last month, and who then entered on the possession of 200,000l, in funded, and 40,000l in landed property."

Henry Stephenson, Esq., of Park Street, Grovesnor Square
"The Jury consulted for a short time, and not thinking there was evidence sufficient to send the postilion for trial, they returned a verdict of 'Accidental death'."
